The Rev. Michael DeKay, who was ordained in 2012, has served in the Diocese of Huron for the past eleven years at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, first as Assistant Curate, then as Associate Priest, and, since 2018, as Vicar of the Cathedral. During his first eight years of ordained life, Michael was also a full-time classroom teacher of grade 8 students at John Dearness Public School. In this role, he coached multiple school teams, arranged visits for senior students to the Grand Theatre, and organized twenty-five year-end trips to Ottawa.
Michael is married to Christine, who worked as a Registered Nurse at LHSC; they have two daughters, Julia and Sarah. Julia is a teacher with TVDSB, and Sarah is a Registered Nurse at LHSC. Julia is married to Jon-Paul, and they are blessed with three children, Miles (7), Samuel (5), and Naomi (2). Naomi loves to yell out “Amen” during Papa’s homilies!
Prior to ordination, Michael served at St. James Westminster as a lay reader and spent a season with the Lutheran and Anglican Ministry of the Bruce Peninsula. He spent a memorable summer in the high Arctic at the invitation of Bishop Benjamin Arreak as that gifted scholar and distinguished Anglican completed the latest translation of Holy Scripture into Inuktitut. It was an honour for Michael to serve with Bishop Ben, get to know people in numerous Inuit communities, and experience life at 73 degrees north latitude!
